The home guide

Solid wood asks for a little more thought than flat-pack furniture, and rewards it for decades. Here is what we tell customers who walk into our Munich shop with a question.

Choosing the right size and shape

Measure the room, not just the piece. Leave at least 60-90cm of walking space around a dining table and check door widths and stair turns before you order, solid wood pieces are heavier and less forgiving to manoeuvre than flat-pack furniture. When in doubt, tape the footprint out on your floor for a day before deciding.

Placement: light, heat and humidity

Solid wood keeps breathing after it leaves our workshop. Keep pieces at least 30cm from radiators and open fireplaces, and out of direct, all-day sun, both dry heat and strong UV can cause faster fading and tiny surface cracks. A stable room around 40-60% humidity is ideal, close to what most homes naturally hold.

Everyday cleaning

A soft, slightly damp cloth is all an oiled surface needs for daily wiping, dry it immediately afterwards. Avoid soaking the wood, harsh detergents, steel wool or silicone-based sprays, they strip the oil and dull the finish over time. For grease or wine, a little mild soap on a damp cloth followed by a dry pass is enough.

Re-oiling and small repairs

Once or twice a year, or whenever water stops beading on the surface, refresh the finish with a thin coat of the same hard-wax oil we used in the workshop. Sand lightly with fine-grit paper along the grain first if the surface feels rough, then oil, wait, wipe off the excess. Scratches and small dents almost always disappear with this same routine, that's the real advantage of solid wood over veneer.

Where our wood comes from

We source oak, walnut and beech from certified European forests, mostly within a few hundred kilometres of our Munich workshop, where regulated, selective felling keeps forests growing back faster than they're cut. Choosing solid wood over composite materials also means choosing a piece that can be repaired, refinished and passed down instead of replaced, the most sustainable furniture is the one you never throw away.
